A day after the presidential election, results from almost all the states showed that Goodluck Ebele Jonathan would emerge as the president-elect. This did not go down well with the northerners who supported Buhari as they started rioting saying that the election had been rigged. The innocent people that suffered in their hands were the NYSC corp members. I mean after the incident in suleja, all those involved should have made sure corpers were 100% secured but that was too much a task to do.
THE SAD STORIES
My mum called to tell me that my uncle's son had been killed in Bauchi state. He was a computer science graduate that was going to start work soon but had decided to join his other corp members in conducting the election somewhere in Bauchi state.
His dad said that when the riot started , his son called him saying all was not well that himself and some other corp members just ran into a police station but the policemen have nothing to even defend themselves... :( then the line went off. He tried several times to call his son back but noone was picking until someone picked up but it wasnt his son...it was some hausa man and he could not understand what the man was trying to say.
He had no idea where his son was until when he was contacted that his son and about 6 other corp members had been killed...
The northerners claimed that the nysc corp members had been bribed to rig the election but is that a reason to kill them?? :(
When INEC came to the iyana ipaja camp that corp members interested in the election exercise should fill a form. I remember telling everyone that they should all be careful because I knew it was a bad idea. Its sad to hear what is happening now. Some of my friends told me how there were no security agents present at their location and they were left at the mercy of those that wanted the election to favour them.
WHY?
allow people to serve their nation like this without protecting ALL of them
WHY??
The truth about it is, some are engaging in this exercise because of the small "change" INEC will be paying them plus the "extra" they'll get and the few others(very few) are doing it because they want to serve their country. Meet Mr Ukeoma Ikechukwu facebook profile (LATE).
His fb status probably when the elections started:
"update on the election, God is with us. to all that r concerned be wise & shun any form of bribery. once again God is with us."
THEN HIS LAST STATUS..THE LAST TIME MOST OF HIS FRIENDS MIGHT HAVE HEARD FROM HIM:
“Na wao! This CPC supporters would hv killed me yesterday, no see threat oooo. Even after forcing underaged voters on me they wanted me to give them the remaining ballot paper to thumb print. Thank God for the police and am happy i could stand for God and my nation. To all corps members who stood despite these threats esp. In the north bravo! Nigeria! Our change has come.”
Young men and women after all the stress from Nigerian universities and all it took them to get a degree get killed for nothing....
If they had been guarded by CAPABLE security agent
If the Northerners would realise that we are all one
If and only if....
My request to the government:
That the corp members are given a befitting burial ceremony .
That their families are compensated and those injured are also compensated.
That no corp member should engage in this exercise again especially in the riot prone areas.
Now my problem is that these requests as well as many more might fall on deaf government ears. shame on all of them if they end up doing nothing reasonable about this. SHAME!!
