Apple Co-founder, Steve Jobs is dead

Apple co-founder and Chairman Steve Jobs died today, Apple said. He was 56.

Jobs had been suffering from various health issues following the seven-year anniversary of his surgery for a rare form of pancreatic cancer in August 2004. Apple announced in January that he would be taking an indeterminate medical leave of absence, with Jobs then stepping down from his role as CEO in late August.

Jobs had undergone a liver transplant in April 2009 during an earlier planned six-month leave of absence. He returned to work for a year and a half before his health forced him to take more time off. He told his employees in August, "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

Jobs leaves behind his wife, four children, two sisters, and 49,000 Apple employees.

Steve Jobs will be remembered as the man that invented devices we didn't know we needed until he invented them. He is dead  but his name and his works will definitely live on.
RIP STEVE JOBS

Online gamers crack AIDS enzyme puzzle, bring scientists closer to finding the cure

So I guess playing game is not a waste of time as people think.

Online gamers  have deciphered the structure of an enzyme of an AIDS-like virus that had defeated the efforts of scientists for a decade.

Aids virus

"The exploit is published on Sunday in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, where -- exceptionally in scientific publishing -- both gamers and researchers are honoured as co-authors."
Their target was a monomeric protease enzyme, a cutting agent in the complex molecular tailoring of retroviruses, a family that includes HIV. Figuring out the structure of proteins is vital for understanding the causes of many diseases and developing drugs to block them.

Figuring out the structure of proteins is vital for understanding the causes of many diseases and developing drugs to block them. But a microscope gives only a flat image. Pharmacologists, though, need a 3-D picture that "unfolds" the molecule and rotates it in order to reveal potential targets for drugs.
NOW THE FUN PART

In 2008,  a fun-for-purpose video game was developed by the University of Washignton  in which gamers, divided into competing groups, compete to unfold chains of amino acids -- the building blocks of proteins -- using a set of online tools. homepage -> http://folding.stanford.edu/
To the astonishment of the scientists, the gamers produced an accurate model of the enzyme in just three weeks what has taken scientists decades.
"We wanted to see if human intuition could succeed where automated methods had failed," Firas Khatib of the university's biochemistry lab said in a press release. "The ingenuity of game players is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems."

One of Foldit's creators, Seth Cooper, explained why gamers had succeeded where computers had failed.
"People have spatial reasoning skills, something computers are not yet good at," he said.
"Games provide a framework for bringing together the strengths of computers and humans. The results in this week's paper show that gaming, science and computation can be combined to make advances that were not possible before."

funny comment i found-> "Scientists are struggling to find aliens, while gamers have been blasting them off for decades." #TRUETALK
SO okay people, it wasn't mortal kombat, football manager or their likes
those ones are probably still a waste of time..LOL
These gamers have solved a huge problem and as they say, its a big step to finding the cure to AIDS as well as some other presently incurable diseases.
I asked a friend a question after I read this story
WHAT  WOULD THE CURE TO AIDS DO TO THE WORLD?

Ebay seller says "NICHOLAS CAGE is a VAMPIRE" with PROOF

Nicolas Cage and American Civil War "doppleganger"

Nicholas Cage Portrait - P 2011
photo of a man in Bristol, Tennessee in the year 1980

A photo recently surfaced on eBay of a man during the Civil War era who looks exactly like Nicolas Cage.
An antique dealer has put the image up for auction on eBay and is demanding at least $1MILLION – the equivalent of £635,000.
As of Sept. 16, the seller had received 78 offers on the photo, all of which have been declined.
The seller jokes that the picture is proof Cage is not 47 as he claims – but an immortal vampire.
The image of a man looking identical to the Con Air star dates from around 1870.
Jack Mörd, from Seattle, Washington, says the photo was taken of a man in Bristol, Tennessee.
He said: "My theory is that he allows himself to age to a certain point, maybe 70, 80 or so, then the actor 'Nicolas Cage' will 'die'.
"But in reality, the undead vampire 'Nicolas Cage' will have rejuvenated himself and appeared in some other part of the world, young again, and ready to start all over."
Mr Mörd runs The Thanatos Archive and says he is a fan of Victorian-era photography.
He assured prospective bidders: "This is not a trick photo of any kind and has not been manipulated in Photoshop or any other graphics program.
'It's an original photo of a man who lived in Bristol, TN, sometime around the Civil War."

Na wa o!! The things people come up with and to think he is demanding for
1MILLION DOLLARS.
To be honest, the picture of the guy from 1980 looks like Nicholas Cage but why would anyone conclude that "Nicholas Cage is a vampire".
All these vampire series and movies have to stop, people are losing it. LOL!!
or could it be true??   X_X

Thoughtful Thursdays: I want to be like Her……No Her……umm Yes Her!

Females are the most indecisive sexes on the planet….and more fortunate than not, I am one indecisive person. Yes, I said fortunate…lol…why should I limit myself to just a few options when I have a zillion varieties to select from. I owe it to myself to satisfy my thirst to always have the best of anything within my reach (well as I try to cut my cloth according to my size). In my journey to find myself and understand who I am, who I want to be, qualities that I want to shape my being, I do not limit myself to just one person as a role model. For every person I admire, there is a quality that has drawn me to them. Not necessarily because the others do not have it, but because people exhibit it in different ways individually that makes them stand out more than the other person.

So my style icons are Victoria Beckham, Queen Raina of Jordan, Whitney Port, Blair Waldorf (the character), Miranda Kerr and Solange Knowles. Their fashion styles are not too far off, well of all of the mentioned, Solange is pretty much the most urban. But I just can’t seem to choose one particular person in this category to emulate wholly because it’s more fun and adventurous to come up with something that combines what I see in all of them. I am definitely not the only one who has loads of people they look up to in one category of …’whatever it may be’. So you probably get my gist, it gets more interesting in our attempts to fit all of these different features in one.

The same way I have people I look up to when it comes to more staid aspects such as my defining values. The people in this category are those I know personally, they are people I have lived with or been closely acquainted to. Close enough to understand what makes them who they are, how they perceive things, their spiritual foundation, their goals in life, and enough to know what so..so would do in a given situation. These are my Friends (notice the cap.’F’ lol…) who I can count on one hand. I surely have loads of people I talk to or hang with or party with or even share things with but whom am I deceiving? I can only rely on a tinny tiny fraction of these people 24/7. No one is perfect, my Friends individually have their short comings but combining all their winning values together would make a wonderful person (who I aspire to me as I get older and wiser and more settled on my journey to finding me…hoping I don’t get lost on d way lol).

To some extent, I guess personality contributes to what degree a person’s indecisiveness is. Some people are ‘go getters’ they know what they want and where they are headed. Once they make up their minds there is no turning back. Well some of us are not like that and the earlier we admit it and deal with it the better for us, before we get stuck in places we don’t want to be, places that are not meant for us, places we aren’t meant for. This does not me we (people like me) do not know what we want. We actually do, and a limited sample does not satisfy us. Since we know this is part of our nature, we tend to be picky (in a good way) and are ready to spend time (wisely) trying out various things till we find the ‘perfect’ (subjective to different individuals) combination we seek else the search continues. J

In the end, it may take a life time for some of us, others my find their ‘perfect’ combinations earlier what ever the case, it would have been a worthwhile journey. We would have learnt and experienced so much. We would have funny faces (comprising of smiley, serious, embarrassed, dreamy looks etc) as we reminisce on our lives, the highs, the lows and the limbos.

Totally my opinion,
Signed: AOI

BOKO HARAM THREATENS TO BOMB ABOUT 19 UNIVERSITIES

Boko Haram sent an e-mail last Thursday to the mail box of UNIBEN Registrar, notifying the institution of its resolve to bomb the university as part of its agenda to stop western education in the country.
In the purported e-mail, the Islamic Sect gave September 12 to 17 as the target date to detonate bombs at the higher institution, warning that the message was “not a threat, but a notification which must be strictly adhered to.”
The sect declared that it had listed University of Benin alongside 19 other universities where it planned to explode bombs within the stipulated period it gave, saying “Western education must stop in Nigeria. May Allah bless us."

University of Ibadan also received a threat. The authorities of the University of Ibadan have confirmed the threat by members suspected to be Boko Haram sect that they wanted to bomb the university between 12 and 17 September. The rumour was confirmed, Monday by the  Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Pro. Elijah Afolabi Bamigboye. The threat led to panic among staff and students of the institution as  there was heavy security presence at the main entrance to the university,  opposite Agbowo Shopping Complex. Many staff and visitors going into the campus were subjected to thorough search by security operatives who were armed with AK 47 rifles and bullet proof jackets.Prof. Bamigboye who said he too was subjected to the search said security beef-up was necessary to check any eventuality.
“We heard rumours that a group which detests education is likely to descend on institutions where education is being imparted. We heard that U.I is top on the list. When we heard the rumour of  the threat to bomb U.I, we did not want to take chances. We’ve heard of experiences in the past, especially the recent bombing of the UN house in Abuja as well as the Force headquarters which left several people dead”.

Oh!! for goodness sake can someone just do something about this people and fast. My friend at Obafemi Awolowo University tells me  the security in her school is tight now and I bet some students are scared. I also heard, UI has declared 3 days of fasting and prayer.hmmmm good but in addition, they better tighten up their security o and do more to prevent it from happening. Heaven helps those who help themselves.
God help us.
